Six Flags over Texas ... Getting an Alcohol License?

For those of you who do not know, there are a few amusement parks called Six Flags which are located in across the country.  This specific park is located in Arlington, TX and is called Six Flags Over Texas.  If you are familiar with the park, you are aware that this is a park meant for Thrill Seekers.  Many of these thrill seekers are between the ages of 13 and 23.

This park includes rides such as; Superman, Mr. Freeze, and Texas Giant.  There are rides for the younger (more vertically challenged) crowd which is located in Looney Tunes USA.  Kids that are 3 1/2 feet and under can enjoy Looney Tune Bumper Cars, Speedy Gonzalez Truckin, and Yosemite Sam's Texas Tea Cups.

Sounds like fun, right?  I think so and have even purchased season passes for the family.  Well, recently Six Flags Over Texas has requested a Liquor License.  This has not pleased the Citizen's of Arlington nor the Mayor.  They are protesting this request because they feel it takes away from the 'family' aspect of the amusement park.  A representative from Six Flags mentioned that they are currently serving alcohol in their San Antonio park (Six Flags Fiesta Texas) and there have not been any issues thus far.  The request is being reviewed and should be decided within the next 60 days,

Personally, I think they should not serve alcohol.  The alcohol itself will not make it more dangerous, but if not monitored closely I can image many bad things could happen.  If they are approved for this license, I would not want my kids there without me.  Would I send my kids to the local bar down the street to hang out and have fun?  No.  So, why would I send them to Six Flags?

What do you think?  Are people over reacting?

JOHN!  How's it going?

I say NOOO!  I wouldn't want alcohol at Six Flags. It's one of the very few clean places left. I'm with you, I wouldn't want my daughter there without me any longer. She's 16 and that could turn into a challenging environment for her.

John,

I'm with you...

Last thing anyone wants is an inebriated person on the Mr. Freeze ride, right?  Who is going to clean up that mess?

John - Come on, what's wrong with drinking a few beers while your kids are on the rides?  The drive home is just a bigger amusement park, right?

Hi Trunda!  It is going fantastic.  The weather is great, family is well, business keeps me busy and out of trouble. :-)  I agree, I would not allow even my 16 year old to go.  I have a few years left for that, but still I don't think I would allow it.

Exactly Sheila.  Those rides get you sick enough.  Add alcohol on top of that and 'watch out below'.

Erik - My concern is that my kids will run into Pacman Jones or something after a few drinks.  I see your point though, why not have fun all the way home as well.  I guess I didn't think about it that way.

John,

Do you avoid Rangers and Cowboy games because they sell beer there?

Hi John, I blogged about this earlier as well. I think that an amusement park is completely different than a ball game.  At ball games, for the majority of the time, people are either sitting or standing, but mainly staying in one place with most focus on the game.  At an amusement park, people aren't sitting still.  THey're walking all over the place going from ride to ride, and if they've had too much to drink and get on a ride, they might get sick all over the ride and people, and then the line is held up while the 16 year old ride operators have to clean up the mess, and then the next person in line is thinking how gross that is to sit where someone just got sick...

But that's just my opinion...  I think it would be good for them in order to get more revenue, but bad because it probably would not be implemented well.

I dont think that alcohol and amusement parks could/ should go hand-in-hand. It is difficult to monitor consumption and safety of other people in a huge place like that. I'm with you. No, no, no.

Hi John... I think that if Six Flags is given an alchol permit the potential for serious problems far outweighs any benefit that may come from it.  Let me put it this way... nobody has ever told me that they were not going to go to Six Flags because they couldn't get a beer there.

Hi Rick.  I do think I would compare the two.  But to answer the question, I would not allow my kids to go their alone either.  What if they run into the guy/gal who did not like the same team as my children?  I would take them myself, but they would not be alone.  If Six Flags is allowed to serve alcohol then I will have the same issue.  They will not be allowed to go alone with their friends (not that they would at the age of 10 and 11 anyway).  But someone who is intoxicated can be an issue.  Would you not agree?  Then add on top of that the fact that they are going on a ride that will make them possibly more dizzy... sickness... need I say more?  But hey, they pointed out in the article that they do not have this issue in San Antonio so who knows.

Donna, Looks like we agree here.  No alcohol.  Sorry I missed your article.

I was looking for the report that stated how they would monitor someone's drinking, Loreena.  I think it had to do with a wrist band and maybe the fact that you could only buy two drinks or something.  I did not see a clear direction on the subject though.

Exactly Steve.  I have never not wanted to go because I could not get a beer.  Sure, it would make them more money because it would probably cost about $5.00 or $6.00 per 12 oz, but will they lose business?  We may find out soon.

Hey John,

Hard to say. My son is 23 months, so I can't say for sure now. I can say that I wouldn't send my son anywhere alone for many years to come. I love to have  cold one and sometimes wish I could enjoy a beverage at "the park" if I could. My wife doesn't drink, so she could drive. I do hear "the point" though and would agree with you as all it takes is one idiot to ruin it for everyone. I'd be okay if it didn't have a liquor license.

Good Morning!  I am with you Greg that sometimes I enjoy a cold one.  And perhaps I am more concerned than I need to be.  I just see any amusement park as a kids area and not a party place for 21 and over.  Disney Land does not sell alcohol and they seem to be doing okay.

John, I know how I feel when I'm in an airliner and have had a few drinks ow multiply that by 10 on the roller coaster and I wouldn't want to be walking underneath a ride. I agree with you John.

A hearty thanks for visiting my 2 posts also...

Paul - Im a subscriber buddy.  No need to thank me.  I appreciate the witty posts.  Also, thanks for agreeing.  I don't think Im crazy for not wanting alcohol there.  Its probably not a big deal to many people, but it is to me.  Next they will start serving shots at Disneyland.
