Didn't Realize It's Been 13 Weeks... My Bells Palsy Update

The last time I wrote about Bells Palsy, it was 8/14/09 which was week #8. Well, its been 13 weeks as of tomorrow morning.

There is not too much to report, but I do like keeping track of any changes along the way so I continue to post. Since my last update, I have been back to the doctor to check in and also ask about his thoughts on acupuncture. I still have not done it and I'm not sure if I will. The doctor made it sound as though it would be a waste of time/money, but ultimately left it up to me. We'll see. I haven't decided one way or another just yet although it appears I am leaning towards not doing it.

Over the past 2 weeks I have seen more movement in my face. My left eyebrow moves slightly, but not to the extent of my right one. I can still make a mean Elvis face without trying hard. Also, I can smirk on the left side. At first I thought since my eyebrow was moving, maybe that meant I would get movement from top to bottom. When I realized I was able to move my mouth a little, I knew that was not right and apparently I would slowly get movement back in random areas.

If I were to put it into a percentage, I'd say I'm about 8-10% back and still WAY off from a full recovery.

In my posts, I always like to clarify how lucky I am that this is temporary, even if its been over 3 months now. It's not life threatening and is minor compared to what others have gone through with other major illnesses. I'm thankful that I'll make a full recovery and its just taking time. I'm also hoping that the movement I have is a sign that I'm on the road to full functionality. Its a real drag not being able to have a complete smile. I look so serious in so many pictures lately because I don't want to have a half smile. Instead I have some 'thug' look  LOL.  I tell people I'm going through a phase.

Thank you all for your kind words in my posts. As with everything in life, you move on and handle your business. For me, the only thing different is that I don't smile in pictures. All other things in life are back to normal (closings, parent meetings, sport functions, etc). Some people know I have bells palsy because I told them early on. Others have no idea and have just come to know me as a guy that can't move the left side of his face. I haven't taken the time to explain to people like I use to. I'm sure they notice, but we move forward. Eventually my face will have full movement and maybe it will come up. For now, I don't feel obligated to explain anymore.

Have a great weekend! And thanks again for reading my posts.

John, My aunt had bells palsy as the result of a stroke and had a full recovery. I wish you the same success!

John, I'm way in to alternative medicine and I think you should at least try acupuncture.  I have a long time friend who years ago use to have migraines until she had acupuncture.  It is not that expensive and I just don't see that it will hurt anything. I had it done for my tennis elbow and it did help.  I have to admit it is pretty weird when they put the needles in but it doesn't hurt; just a little prick.

Glad to hear you are recovering. I have had a few friends who have the affliction in years past.

It is frustrating but you are on the road to recovery and it sounds like you get to make faces :0)

Still take it easy and do not get yourself stressed out until you are back to normal.

I'll await for your post about a full recovery... Some improvements better than no improvement.

Thank you Wanda. When it first happened, I was afraid of the stroke thing. The doctors confirmed that it was a result of a stroke. Apparently there is not clear reason why this happens. They have a few theories, but nothing confirmed yet.

Marchel - I actually heard that was EXCELLENT for migraines. Honestly, I was hoping to hear that someone else tried it while having Bells Palsy but that didnt happen. LOL I'm still open to it, but have not made the commitment yet.

Terry - I think the faces are the best part. I make them every day at myself to see what new movement I may have. If I am on the downward side of this hill, then I should be recovered in less than 2 1/2 months. Was hoping for sooner, but I'll take the full recovery when ever it decides to happen.

Hi John, I'm glad to hear you are having some improvement.  Hopefully time will fly by and you will be back to normal and this will be just a memory.  I'll keep you in my prayers.

Hi John, you certainly have a good spirit about your trial(s) with bells palsy which reflects the inner character of the man. I too shall pray that you receive full recovery. In the meantime smile inwardly and let your eyes so shine.

Agree-- consider trying acupuncture -- a long time ago we heard someone used it for this and it helped.

Thank you Shirley. Im looking for a full recovery in the near future.

Teral - I did have an issue with it when I started. It was hard for me. I missed closings, didnt meet with many people. I always took it lightly because I knew it would go away at some point, but I am much more comfortable now.

Bob & Carolin - I heard that from one person, but wanted to hear it from more before I took the leap.

Hi John, I'm glad to hear you've made some recovery! Great news!!! You seem to have a great attitude and I would investigate the alternative methods and make and informed decision. I know it's hard not knowing the root cause of your problem and trust you are still pushing you doctor for answers. They hate that, I know :)

Cynthia - I was just in his office again on Thursday, as a matter of fact. I really should try the acupuncture. Its not like the procedure costs a lot and it cant make it worse.

You have an awesome attitude John and there is a huge lesson for all of us to learn here in your "victories" over this. Press onward towards the prize John, you are blessing other's through this trial and your willingness to share.

If you want a name of someone who you can speak to about acupuncture please let me know - I can refer you to a friend who is also a chiropractor & acupuncturist - it's all natural. I know she'd be happy to talk to you and just give you some insight and information if you need it.
