Coffee with the Mayor of Frisco Texas

Each Month Mayor Maso hosts a 'Coffee with the Mayor'. Its a very informal meeting where Mayor Maso will answer questions from Frisco Residents about anything pertaining to our wonder city. Typically, these meetings are held on the 5th floor of City Hall and there are between 20-30 attendees.

A few months back, Mayor Maso thought of changing up the scenery and hosting these meetings at various locations.  The first time, the meeting was held at the Frisco Emergency Operations Center.  For more information from about that meeting, check out the What Happened During "Coffee with the Mayor" post I wrote.  It was a very educational meeting and brought in at least 60 attendees.

Well, this month the Mayor has decided to move the meeting to the North Texas Enterprise Center for Medical Technology (NTEC), which is located at 6170 Research Road in Frisco.  if you are not familiar with NTEC - It is a non-profit, medical technology incubator program.  This program is financed by the Frisco Economic Development Corporation (FEDC) and other private partners.  In 2007, the EDC and City of Frisco issued a $10.8 million bond to build this fantastic facility.  Now is your chance to get an inside look at what this bond has built.

Who: Frisco Residents (and anyone else of course)

When: Monday June 8th @ 8 am

Where: NTEC 6170 Research Rd - Frisco Texas

Come on out and learn about this fantastic 50,000 square foot facility that opened in November 2008.  Learn about NTEC and of course, there will be time to talk with Mayor Maso about the growth and future of Frisco Texas.

Coffee with the Mayor in March 2009 - Mayor Maher Maso of Frisco Texas

Coffee with Mayor Maso happens on the 2nd Monday of each month.  Although we skipped February due to the Mayor's busy schedule, we are meeting again this month.  'Coffee with the Mayor' will take place March 9, 2009 from 8:00 am - 9:00 am.

In December, I wrote about the Mayor's new initiative which was to start having these meetings at a new location.  In January we met at the Frisco Emergency Operations Center where Mayor Maso had the best turnout I've seen.  The information provided during this meeting was fantastic.  I learned a new respect and understanding of how our city officials would respond in an emergency situation.

This month, we are meeting at the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd (the original location).  This will bring everyone back together to discuss the new location.

If you have never attending these meetings, I highly recommend it.  Mayor Maso welcomes all questions about our community.  Typically, the meetings will last a little over an hour because the discussions can get into quite a bit of detail.  For a few of the summaries, check out these posts - January Summary and  December Summary.

When - 3/9/09

Where - George A Purefoy Municipal Center 6101 Frisco Square Blvd

Time - 8:00 am - 9:00 am

Topic - Open Discussions about Frisco Texas.  This meeting is very informal and is open to all Frisco Texas Residents.

Something you may not know about Mayor Maher Maso - He is a blogger!  Thats right, Mayor Maso has a blog called FriscoFirst on Blogspot.

So, come on out and join us Monday to see what's going on in our neighborhood.  If you are not able to attend, check back in to my blog for the summary and feel free to share any questions or concerns.  Hope to see you Monday!

What happened during "Coffee with the Mayor" - Frisco Texas ?

This months "Coffee with the Mayor" of Frisco Texas was the best turnout yet.  Last month, Mayor Maso discussed a new theme for these meetings.  The theme would be to hold the meetings at a new location each month.  The location would be the topic of discussion (at least to begin with) and would them move to other local events and discussions.  The new theme started this month when we held the meeting at Frisco's Emergency Operations Center which is located in the Frisco Central Fire Station.  As a result, over 60 residents attending.  This marked the biggest showing yet.

I have to tell you in advance that I tried to keep up on the notes, but I was so absorbed with the information provided that I found myself not taking as many notes.  It was extremely fascinating to me how the systems worked.  The technology and communication within the city was just amazing.

Chief Mack Borchardt was the main speaker for the first 35 minutes of the meeting.  During that time, he discussed a product called Situational Awareness For Emergency Response ( S.A.F.E.R. ).  Currently, the system is tied to the local schools.  With a click of the button, the Emergency Response Team can see what is going on within our local schools in case of a serious emergency.  This provides the ERT with an inside view so they know what is happening, what to expect, and how to respond to the situation.  In addition, all Response Vehicles have a lowjack type system in place which helps identify which vehicles are on location.  All of this helps the Chief direct his team and communicate with other officials.  The system can easily be installed with other facilities which have camera's in place.  Ultimately providing further safety within our city.  Ideally, it will never need to be used, but the technology is there and is far more advanced than most other cities have in place.

In addition to the SAFER project, the Chief provided insight to other safety features.  For example, the emergency sirens are tested daily (rotated and signals) and weekly (sirens can be heard for miles).  Another interesting fact was that our Fire Trucks have sensors on them to change street signals from red to green.  This helps them in traffic and assists with keeping other drivers safe.

After hearing about the safety equipment in place and plans for new developments, its no wonder Frisco is one of the safest cities in Texas.  As a matter of fact, we are in the top tier from ISO (International Organization for Standardization).  What does this mean to you?  Its a ranking system for several things.  In this case, it measures our emergency response time and emergency facilities, among other things.  Ultimately, it means LOWER INSURANCE PREMIUMS.

The average response time is 4-5 minutes anywhere in Frisco Texas.

Although a majority of our focus was on the facility and functionality, we did discuss a few upcoming events.  One of the events is a class called "City Hall 101".  This will be a free class offered.  The discussion within the class will be about City Hall, the different divisions, and how the residents can help make a difference.  There are many opportunities for residents to get involved.

We currently have over 102K residents and growing.  Of the employers within Frisco, the Independent School District is still the largest.  As a matter of fact, they are employing another 600 employees within the next year due to the opening of a High School.  Each year, Frisco ISD has grown their employee base as a result of additional schools and new residents.

It was not yet announced where the next meeting will be held, but I certainly look forward to it.  This months meeting was very educational and my blog does it no justice.  I invite you to take a trip and be prepared to be fascinated.

Summary from 'Coffee with the Mayor'

On Monday, I had the opportunity to attend the monthly "Coffee with the Mayor".  During these meetings, the Mayor welcomes any and all Frisco Residents to attend and ask questions/concerns about our wonderful city.  This includes development plans, business relocations, energy efficiencies, etc.

Typically, there are approx 25-30 attendees.  This month was very small, only 9 attendees.  This could be due to the weather, time of the year, or any number of reasons.  What I liked about the smaller group is that we had more focus on issues rather than addressing several issues in no particular order.  However, the intentions of the meeting are suppose to be informal.

We discussed quite a few topics within the hour and a half meeting.  Below, I have highlighted a few of those topics:

Meeting Location - We discussed the possibility of meeting in different locations each month, such as the new Fire Station, Medical Center, or Independent School District.  Each facility does not have many visitors and would provide an additional topic of discussion (not that we are ever short of topics).  The only concern would be that people have been use to meeting on the 5th floor of the library for the past 5 month.  More details to follow in the next few weeks.

Water Bill Increase - It was announced last week that the water bill for residents would increase.  In previous years, the city was able to pick up the increases through its reserves from fast growth.  Since the growth within our city has slowed down, that surplus is not as large and therefore calls for an increase.  Fact is, the city receives an increase in water charges each year and is looking for the best way to pass those increases on to residents.  They are still reviewing this portion of the budget, which should be finalized shortly.

New Businesses - Frisco is always trying to compete for new businesses to relocate in our area.  There target has been large companies of 100 employees or more and an annual salary of $60K.  Although they have a specific target, they do not shy away from smaller businesses or 'mom & pop' shops.  Typically, when a company is searching to relocate or expand, Frisco is within the top 3 cities of North Texas.

Apartments - There are many new areas rezoned for Apartments.  This is due to our current economic status, there is a larger need for apartments in and around Frisco.  We may see this trend over the next few years.

New Mall In Frisco - That's right.  There have been a few discussions about building a new mall at 380 and North Dallas Tollway.  The discussions have actually been in the works for quite some time.  The builder (name withheld) is the same company that built the StoneBriar Mall in Frisco years ago.  A few days ago, this company announced some financial issues so they pulled out of the plans for the new mall.  The city officials are talking with a new developer and are hoping to move things forward.  No ETA at this time on the completed project.

As I mentioned, there were many other topics discussed during this meeting (marketing, budget, 'Disney' rumor... which is not true).  It would be great for you to come next month.  The meeting is held on the second Monday of each month @ 8 am.  Watch for future posts which will cover the newest location.
